 Broken Heart

Did you know you can die of a broken heart? I didn’t until it happened to me. It goes by many names: broken heart syndrome, takotsubo syndrome, or stress cardiomyopathy. It occurs when someone experiences sudden acute stress that can rapidly weaken the heart muscle. It can happen from two kinds of stress; emotional or physical. Most are from a stressful event but 30% have no known trigger.  Emotional stressors can be grief, fear, anger or even surprise. There are a wide range of physical stressors. Essentially it means a wall of your heart balloons outward and heart function is decreased. It can be so severe you die. It can mimic the symptoms of a heart attack. If you experience symptoms call 911. This syndrome comes on suddenly and generally resolves quickly. I am a ten year survivor of stress cardiomyopathy.
